L-Threonic acid calcium salt is a calcium salt of threonine, a new drug used in the treatment of osteoporosis and as a calcium supplement. It is found in dietary supplements as a source of L-threonine used to treat calcium deficiency and prevent osteoporosis. The most common form is calcium L-threonate, or (2R,3S)-2,3,4-trihydroxybutyrate.L-Threonine is an active metabolite of vitamin C and acts as a stimulant to vitamin C intake. SinceL-Threonic acid calcium salt may play a role in the mineralisation process through its active effect on vitamin C.
L-Threonic acid calcium salt is white granules, almost odourless and tasteless, soluble in water, easily soluble in hot water, insoluble in alcohol, ether and chloroform. Melting point is higher than 330 (decomposition), good resistance to acid and alkali, heat stability, 120 heating for 20min or 200 heating for 10min, no change. L-Threonine is widely found in plants, human stomach acid and uric acid, it is a degradation product of L-ascorbic acid.
L-Threonic acid calcium salt can promote the proliferation, development and mineralisation of osteoblasts, and at the same time, it can promote the expression of type I procollagen mRNA in osteoblasts cultured in vitro, which can increase the density and mechanical properties of bone, and play the role of preventing bone fracture, especially pathological bone fracture, such as the fracture caused by senile osteoporosis.
